Ataxia is a rare genetic disease that robs sufferers of the ability to walk, speak normally, maintain their jobs, and often interact with society. While the illness is physically disabling, and intellect is unaffected, the emotional effects can be permanent and devastating. Many Ataxians begin avoiding public situations and choosing isolation, resulting in missed relationships and job opportunities. Unemployment, distance from family and friends, and depression often sets in. The series, The Hindsight Years, spotlights the lives of four Ataxians with differing lifestyles. Whether they choose to travel the world, get involved in local politics, or pursue an ‘other side of the world’ relationship, they are proving the importance of living today and pursuing their passions. |
